NAS-TDI, Archaeology and cave courses

NAS - TDI

Course in Cave diving and Underwater Archeology

The TDI Full Cave Diving course and the NAS Underwater Archaeology course are taught together in a combined format, aimed at being developed in the cenotes and caves of the Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, within the framework of the Project of Archaeological Investigation in Cenotes and Caves in Quintana Roo.

The NAS & TDI course in cenotes and caves is considered an advanced specialty course that requires the development of special techniques and skills to be mastered in order to execute safe immersions in underground and flooded cavities, such as those located in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is necessary to acquire the knowledge and abilities for the adequate development of archaeological research activities in this context where archaeological and paleontological heritage is located.

These courses do not replace the university academic training necessary to carry out research projects, but rather aim to guide and provide the basic knowledge that allows participants to have a broader view of the theoretical, methodological, and technical tools required by the discipline to be performed in a scientific manner. Additionally, they aim to stimulate interest and knowledge in the matter, which can contribute to the protection, preservation, and proper dissemination of underwater archaeological heritage.

NAS is an organization founded in the UK but with partner organizations around the world. It is based on the principles of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage and, in Mexico, it has the backing and support of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

NAS primarily focuses on teaching courses in nautical or maritime underwater archaeology through theoretical and practical sessions designed at different levels of certification, from the introductory course to advanced courses divided into 4 parts, as well as different specialties and a diploma. It covers topics such as prospecting and archaeological recording, research methodologies, protection and conservation, dissemination and heritage management, and the preparation of proper reports, among other activities.

TDI is the largest and most recognized technical dive certification agency in the world. It is perceived as an innovative and pioneering agency, introducing dive programs that were previously unavailable to the general public, such as gas mixing, rebreathers, and cave diving, among others. These courses are now taught by TDI with the most rigorous standards and procedures.

Who is it addressed to? The training is intended for divers with advanced diving certification who are interested in receiving specialized training in cenotes and caves focused on underwater archaeology. With the recognition granted, participants may be called upon to participate in international research projects.

Objectives: To provide institutional and internationally recognized training to participants interested in underwater archaeological research, imparting knowledge and training in the subject. Special emphasis is placed on the theory, methodology, and techniques of archaeological research in cenotes and flooded caves. During the training process, participants will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge that allow them, based on attitude, skills performance, and knowledge achievement criteria, to obtain certification granted by the Nautical Archaeology Society and Technical Divers International.
